The Sheila E. track from 1984 sits alongside a funky alternate version of a song most fans only know in its standard arrangement. There are two Miles Davis collaborations included — one studio recording with Davis, and another captured live with Miles performing the song. But the centrepiece is track six. Recorded with Prince and his band at Paisley Park in 1987, this song was later released by Nona Hendryx — but this recording is something completely unique. It captures the full creative process from the very first idea through to the moment the band is ready to record the final take.
You hear Prince working out the arrangement in real time, debating choices with his band members, and gradually building the song into shape. Even through the disagreements, there is no question who is in command. It is one of the most genuinely revealing recordings of Prince's working method ever captured — the kind of document that almost never escapes the studio in any era.
