Baal marks a rare and compelling screen appearance by David Bowie in the title role of Bertolt Brecht’s first play. Set in pre–First World War Germany, the film presents a series of episodes from the life of an amoral poet-singer, obsessively devoted to his own artistic vision. Intensely connected to nature and the wider universe, Baal remains chillingly indifferent to ordinary human emotion—an emotional detachment that leaves devastation in its wake.
