In April 1983, before the Serious Moonlight Tour transformed David Bowie into a global stadium act on the back of Let's Dance, the band assembled at Las Colinas Soundstage in Dallas, Texas to rehearse the show. Stevie Ray Vaughan — who had played guitar on the Let's Dance album and who would have been the breakout guitar star of the tour had he stayed — was still part of the band at this point. Dallas Moonlight captures those rehearsals on 27th April 1983 across two discs of soundboard-quality material.
Why This Recording Is Historically Important
This is Bowie and Stevie Ray Vaughan rehearsing together as bandmates. SRV would famously leave the tour over a financial dispute before the live dates began — making these Dallas rehearsals among the very few professionally-recorded performances of Bowie and Vaughan working together at length. The setlist is the full Serious Moonlight production rehearsal — 32 tracks across two discs running 132 minutes total — spanning Heroes, Life On Mars, Let's Dance, China Girl, Station To Station, Ashes To Ashes, Space Oddity, Young Americans, Fame, Modern Love, Rebel Rebel, and dozens more.
