Prince — Deposition (3-CD Set)
Out-of-Print Collection of Rare Demos, Protégée Tracks & the Complete Madhouse 24
Deposition is a three-disc Prince collector compilation that has gone out of print and become genuinely difficult to track down. It gathers some of the most fascinating material in the entire Prince archive — his own demos of songs he wrote for other artists, rare Graffiti Bridge and Dream Factory session recordings, unreleased Emancipation-era mixes, and the complete unreleased Madhouse album 24. For collectors who want to understand how prolific Prince was as a songwriter for others, this set is essential.
The Songs Prince Gave Away
A huge part of Deposition's appeal is hearing Prince's own versions of songs he wrote and handed to other artists. Five Women and Old Friends 4 Sale were both offered to Joe Cocker — he recorded the former for his 1992 album Night Calls and turned down the latter. Uh Huh was given to Ray Charles for a Pepsi commercial. Open Book and Hold Me went to Jevetta Steele. The Voice was recorded for Mavis Staples. I Hear Your Voice was written for Patti LaBelle. Allegiance went to Howard Hewett. The P was written for Tevin Campbell. Bliss and Mind Bells went to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki. And the legendary original Kiss demo recorded in 1985 for Mazarati is here too.
The Protégée & Session Material
The set is rich with Paisley Park history — the Martika's Kitchen sessions (Martika's Kitchen, Don't Say U Love Me, Love…Thy Will Be Done, Spirit), Graffiti Bridge session recordings (Come Outside And Play, The Grand Progression, Oobey Doop, My Tree, Positive Place), Get Blue written for Louie Louie, and Neon Telephone given to The Three O'Clock. Plus the Steve Silk Hurley Gangster Glam remixes, unreleased Face Down mixes from the Emancipation era, and My Pony recorded with George Clinton.
The Complete Madhouse 24
A major highlight is the complete unreleased Madhouse album 24 — tracks 17 through 24 including Penetration, R U Legal Yet?, A Girl And Her Puppy, Jailbait, and the full Dopamine Rush Suite. Recorded in December 1988 with Sheila E, Levi Seacer Jr, and Eric Leeds. The Dopamine Rush Suite was later re-recorded in 1991 for Eric Leeds' Times Squared album.
